Having WiFi at home or work can be really convenient when you're using laptops or smartphones/tablets as it means you don't have to be confined to one area when you want to use the Internet, unfortunately just about everything interferes or blocks WiFi to some extent but luckily there are things you can do to try to get the best signal possible.

If possible, your WiFi router or access point should be as high as possible (preferably on the top floor of your house). The signal that comes out from your router spreads out and goes down so devices lower than the router itself will get a better signal than the ones above it. If you can't get the router on the top floor (perhaps because you don't have a phone socket upstairs) then putting it on a high shelf near the phone socket is a good option.

The WiFi coming from your router will be blocked by walls, doors, cupboards, fridges etc so it should really be in as clear a space as possible. Lots of people like to hide their router in a cupboard or behind the television, but this does hinder the range of the WiFi and although you might not think that your router is something that you want out on display, if it's out in the open, the signal will go much further.

Some electronic devices such as microwaves and cordless landline telephones operate on similar frequencies to WiFi and although most modern routers should attempt to change the channel that the WiFi operates on, these devices can still cause interference which either slows down the WiFi connection or stops it going as far as it should. If you suspect that you have a device that might be interfering with your WiFi, try moving the router further away from that device, even a few feet can make a big difference.

Sometimes, even will all the tips we've listed here, you just can't get WiFi into a certain area of the house or the office and something a bit more high tech is needed. We can help you with a range of devices that can either boost the WiFi across a large distance or generate a new, full power WiFi network where you need it the most so if you're still having problems after following these ideas please get in touch and we'll get it sorted out for you.
